I took my sons on edu-vacation last December, but one of the thing that I treasure from the trip is not what we did together, but the encounter with Christopher McDougal’s thoughts.
My 16 year old was having his English lesson with a tutor at Starbucks at Barnes and Noble in San Jose, and I was browsing around the store as I waited to drive him back to the hotel.Â I was intrigued by a book with the title, Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. I started reading it right there, and it’s been on my mind since then.Â I ran almost everyday of the 15 days during the vacation, and remembering a few things like “light”, “forward”, “if it looks like it will need two steps, take three” have made all the difference in running longer and further, which made running so much more enjoyable. And it was all tied to the big questions like, what is happiness? And, how do we live joyfully? Being a 50-year old, listening the TEDx talk by McDougal, was inspiring, because according to him, at 64, I could run long distance just as fast as I did when I was 19.
McDougal reminds us of many myths, like how women were kept away from running marathon until recently, because of medical myth that uterus would fall off. Then he challenges us by saying, “Running shoes cause injuries to runners. ” It takes a lot of courage to say something like that, because the running market is so huge, and so many people’s livelihood off of business such as shoes manufacturers and advertisement, nylon materials manufacturing, box manufacturing, just to mention a few, are dependent on the running business. But this is the era when many people are attempting to face and come to terms with real needs versus excess in longevity, quality of life, and sustainability.
For young and old to think about, talk about, simpler the subject, the better. Christopher McDougal has presented us the subject of running to think about together.
